What is a crown?

A crown refers to a permanent dental restoration designed to replace the cap of your tooth. A dental crown covers a damaged or weak tooth while feeling and functioning just like your natural tooth.

Superior Family Dental only uses non-metal dental materials for Dr. Saigh’s dental prosthetics. This means you only have access to the highest quality, sturdiest, and most natural-looking materials that have no risk of the toxicity of metal.

Why would I need a crown?

Dr. Saigh might suggest a dental crown for several reasons, such as to:

  • Restore a badly damaged or severely decayed tooth
  • Replace a tooth that’s aesthetically unsightly
  • Attach to a dental implant to replace a missing tooth

Dr. Saigh typically fits your crown after you’ve had a root canal to restore the strength and structure of your treated tooth.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is specially designed to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. Bridges are custom-created from an impression of your smile, so your bridge fits comfortably and perfectly in your mouth and replaces your tooth for a fully-functioning and natural-looking smile.

Dr. Saigh carefully affixes a conventional fixed bridge to your smile using crowns that cover the teeth adjacent to your missing tooth. You can choose an alternative bridge if your adjacent teeth can’t support crowns, such as a cantilever bridge.

Why would I need a bridge?

A bridge can replace your missing tooth or teeth and restore your smile by filling in the missing space. A bridge prevents the rest of your teeth from drifting towards the empty gap and shifting out of alignment.

What happens when I get a bridge or crown?

When you get a crown or bridge, Dr. Saigh carefully prepares your teeth by removing areas of decay and shaving off some enamel, reducing the size of the teeth.

After preparing your teeth, Dr. Saigh takes an impression of your smile before sending it to a dental lab, where a qualified dental lab technician fabricates your bridge or crown.

Dr. Saigh typically gives you a temporary crown or bridge you can wear in the meantime while your new permanent replacement is being created (this usually takes about two weeks).

When your new permanent prosthesis is ready, you return to Superior Family Dental where Dr. Saigh usually bonds your dental bridge or crown to your teeth using special dental cement. Once you leave, your crown or bridge is ready to be used just like your natural teeth. There may be some sensitivity, but this should subside within a week.
